Opening Address – First General Meeting of Active Members MSAJ 2026/2027
21 February 2026 marked the first General Meeting of Active Members for the MSAJ 2026/2027 term. It is with great pleasure that we welcomed 81 active members on board this year.
This year's intake reflects a remarkable achievement, with the number of active members increasing by approximately 40% compared to the previous term. This significant growth demonstrates the positive impact of our proactive promotional efforts throughout the registration period and highlights the increasing visibility and relevance of MSAJ among Malaysian students across Japan.
What is even more encouraging is the diversity represented within our membership. Our active members come from various backgrounds, including different ethnicities, scholarship bodies, universities, and self-funded students. This diversity strengthens MSAJ and reflects our role as a platform that unites Malaysian students throughout Japan.
A strong organisation begins with its people. Manpower is the heartbeat of any organisation, ensuring the continuity of its mission and legacy. However, numbers alone are not enough. Without commitment and teamwork, even the largest organisation cannot achieve its goals.
As an Economics student, I often relate organisational dynamics to economic concepts. One of them is the "Free Rider", an individual who benefits from a public good without contributing to it. In economics, this creates market inefficiencies and can lead to underproduction of valuable resources. Similarly, within an organisation, its full potential can only be realised when members actively contribute alongside the benefits they receive.
For this reason, the first General Meeting focused not only on introducing MSAJ's structure and activities, but also on reaffirming the purpose behind the organisation's existence and the significance of contributing towards its mission because when the why is clear, the how becomes easier
Established in 1976, MSAJ remains the only well-established Malaysian student organisation in Japan officially recognised by the Embassy of Malaysia. For nearly five decades, the organisation has played an active role in enhancing student welfare and fostering a sense of community through academic, cultural, professional, and social initiatives.
Unlike many organisations, MSAJ faces a unique challenge in maintaining continuity. As membership is limited to students, individuals naturally leave the organisation upon graduation and entry into the workforce. Consequently, the transfer of knowledge, experience, and institutional memory between generations of members becomes crucial in ensuring that the organisation continues to grow while preserving its legacy.
With its rich history, extensive professional network, and strong alumni connections, MSAJ serves as an invaluable platform for personal development and leadership growth. Thus, I encourage every member to make full use of this opportunity through three key principles:
経験 (Keiken – Experience)
The pursuit of knowledge and experience through organisational responsibilities, observations, and interactions.
挑戦 (Chousen – Challenge)
The willingness to step beyond familiar boundaries and maximise individual potential through challenges that push individuals outside their comfort zones.
貢献 (Kouken – Contribution)
The commitment to contributing ideas, effort, and expertise for the benefit of the community, society, nation, and future generations of students.
The beginning of the 2026/2027 term marks another chapter in MSAJ's long history. With a growing membership base and a shared commitment towards development and service, the organisation is well-positioned to continue strengthening its role as the representative body of Malaysian students in Japan while carrying forward the legacy established over the past five decades.
